What's in a Name? Other "Bryant Parks" Around the Country

We like to think we're a unique park--we are!--but it might surprise you to know that there are other parks around the country that share our name. Every Bryant Park is different! Below are a few of our favorites.

Bryant Park: Albany, Oregon
Bryant Park NYC has fly fishing classes, but Bryant Park in Albany (Oregon, not New York!) is known as a hotspot for catching bluegill, catfish, and smallmouth bass. In addition, it boasts a basketball court and an unusual sport called disc golf--a version of golf with frisbees instead of balls and clubs. Should we bring disc golf to NYC?

Bryant Park Albany has much more water than we have!
Bryant Park: Traverse City, Michigan
At Bryant Park NYC, we have beautiful views of the Manhattan skyline, including the Empire State Building and Chrysler Building. But at Bryant Park in Traverse City, there are beautiful views of Lake Michigan. This lakeside Bryant Park features charcoal grills, swimming, picnic areas, and a playground. It is a popular summer destination for residents of Detroit, and part of the "blue economy" based on the abundant fresh water in the Great Lakes area.

This Bryant Park offers stunning panoramic views of Lake Michigan.

Bryant Park, Riverside, CA
This Bryant Park is located in Riverside, about 60 miles outside of Los Angeles, and is one of its showcase parks. Fun fact: one of Riverside's sister cities is Gangnam, the city in South Korea that is the subject of the popular song by Psy! Thank goodness that the park's recreation center is indoors, because the highest temperature recorded in the park was 113 degrees Fahrenheit! Inside the rec center are facilities for karate, boxing, and ballet.

Bryant Park Riverside has a boxing ring!
These are other, smaller Bryant Parks as well: in Seattle, WAEden Prarie, MN, and Charlotte, NC; and slight variations on the Bryant Park name, like Victoria Bryant State Park, GA. We hope that if you ever happen to visit these other Bryant Parks, you'll enjoy them just as much as you enjoy Bryant Park NYC!

Verizon Power House Opens Today

We discussed earlier in the week the many ways that Bryant Park is a hotbed of activity in the leadup to the Big Game. We could not be more excited to welcome the Verizon Power House to the park, which opens today at 1pm.

The Power House is located on the Fountain Terrace, on the 6th Avenue side of the park.
The Verizon Power House, a 15,000 square foot walk-through experience, occupies the 6th Avenue side of the park. This free, open-to-the-public event features interactive technology that will allow members of the public to "Suit Up" in their favorite NFL team uniform and create a personalized timeline featuring iconic moments in NFL history, technology, and pop culture. Tech-inclined fans will be able to learn more about the NFL Mobile app, try out LTE Multicast, and experience a touch wall that showcases many of Verizon's Powerful Answers stories. In addition, a 270-degree projection mapping room will virtually transport guests from their homes to the stadium, a Wall of Fame will feature consumer generated fan videos, and lockers will be available to the public for phone power charging.

Use the hashtag #WhosGonnaWin to get your team's colors projected atop the Empire State Building.
Verizon will release daily questions on Twitter asking its followers to break down the game's best matchups. Tweet answers to the daily question with #WhosGonnaWin and be sure to look up at the Empire State Building to find out whose team colors will take over when the results are projected LIVE as a light show from 6pm - 7pm EST through Super Bowl Sunday. You can see the Empire State Building from within the park, so you can enjoy the park and the light show simultaneously!

#PEPCITY Pops Up in Bryant Park

Over the last week, passers-by in the park may have noticed some exciting changes taking shape in the park. The towering 40-foot dome (taller than Celisus!) and surrounding tents on the Upper Terrace are sure to catch the eye!

The structures make up #PEPCITY, designed as a "thank you gift" to New York in celebration of Super Bowl XLVIII (Pepsi is located in Purchase, NY, and is an official sponsor of the National Football League). This free, open-to-the-public experience will take place for three days on Wednesday, January 29, Thursday, January 30, and Saturday, February 1.

From 2:00pm to 6:30pm on each of the three days, the dome will house a sampling of the very best of the region's food, culture, art, and sports. Acclaimed local chefs David Burke, Marc Forgione, and Michael Psilakis will create specialty menu items, reflective of their individual culinary styles, made from Pepsi products. Guests will receive "Taste of PepsiCo" passports that enable them to sample and stamp each selection of food.

Samples of the region's other treasures will be available as well. Tony Award-winning playwright Lemon Andersen will take the audience through his coming-of-age experiences as acclaimed artists create real-time visual art pieces. Performances from top Broadway shows, including Pippin, Mamma Mia!, and Chicago will appear onstage throughout the day. New York sports rivalries will be represented in a rap battle between lyricists Yonas and Dylan Owen, refereed by L. Boogs of Hot 97. A multi-screen, multi-media piece will depict the private lives of five extraordinary New York apartments.

Each of the three evenings will feature a free, pre-ticketed concert from popular performing artists. Pop singer Austin Mahone, the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards "Artist to Watch," will open the series on Wednesday. Prince Royce, the chart-topping Latin superstar, will wow the crowds on Thursday. Ziggy Marley, son of reggae legend Bob Marley and a reggae sensation in his own right, will close out the series on Saturday.

Pro Hockey Players Visit Winter Village for NHL Stadium Series

NHL fans look forward to the Winter Classic each year, as hockey is played in its purest form - outdoors in the freezing cold, but with the added benefit of stadium amenities like grandstand seating, concessions and bathrooms. With the success of this tradition, the NHL is gearing up for a new round of outdoor games with the 2014 Stadium Series, taking place at Dodger Stadium, Soldier Field, and right here in New York City at Yankee Stadium.

Earlier this week, Bryant Park visitors were treated to a surprise exhibition game at the Bank of America Winter Village Rink from past NHL greats including professional players from the New York Rangers, New Jersey Devils, and New York Islanders. The North Jersey Avalanche junior hockey team also came to take part in the fun. Here's a video of all the snowy action from Tuesday.

The Perfect Bryant Park Valentine's Day

No gift in our shop is more perfectly suited to a holiday than the "Meet Me in Bryant Park" Envelope Pendant is to Valentine's Day. This one is a no-brainer folks. Nothing says romance like this charming piece of jewelry. And in honor of the day of love, we're giving away a free copy of the Bryant Park Book with every purchase of our sweet little pendant.

If you really want to up the ante, gift this to your sweetie earlier in the day, with a mysterious and exciting invitation to one of our world class venues for the evening - Bryant Park Grill, Celsius, The Rink and Southwest Porch would all fit the bill. With New York City as your backdrop and this pendant around your Valentine's neck, you'll give Cupid a run for his money.

Decorate your Skates

Here at Bank of America Winter Village Skating Rink, we love watching the skaters glide weightlessly along the ice. Even more fun, though, is checking out the various ways that the skaters personalize their skates, whether rented from us ($15 per person) or brought from home. Below is a selection of the most creative skates we've spotted this year.

We saw a range of decorations on skates that people brought from home.
This pair of skaters opted for bright neon laces to jazz up dark skates. We love the pink and green!

Many skaters attach plush characters from TV shows onto their laces. This skater chose Nickelodeon's Spongebob and Disney's Goofy.
These characters from Comedy Central's South Park should feel right at home on the ice, since they are already dressed in parkas! The skater picked these characters because they are his favorites from the show.
This skater opted for a different matching pair of TV characters. We hope he bought Cookie Monster a cookie at Ice Bites after the skate session!

But we were also impressed with fashions on our own skates.
Rented skates come in two types. The blue skates are figure skates, and the gray are hockey skates. But you can even customize these skates by thinking above the laces...
This skater threw a pair of leg warmers over funky leggings for a comfy skate session in her rented hockey skates.

Have you seen other stylish skates at the rink? Tell us or post a picture in the comments below!

Healthy Additions to the Neighborhood

Our newest neighbors will be adding some healthy real estate to the roster of Bryant Park businesss. We're thrilled to welcome Organic Avenue and Blink Fitness to 5 Bryant Park.

Though it was announced late last year, we were very excited to see these signs go up on 40th Street last week. Organic Avenue is one of New York City's favorite providers of cold pressed juices, raw foods, natural beauty products, and all around healthy lifestyle necessities. Blink offers top of the line gym equipment in a beautiful, new, and clean space at incredibly affordable membership prices. Both are scheduled to open in Summer 2014. Here's to the healthiest season yet!

Ditch Your New Year's Resolution Day

We talked earlier about how Bryant Park can help you keep your resolutions, but we know that it is difficult and no one is perfect. Luckily Friday, January 17, is National Ditch Your New Year's Resolution Day. Whether you choose to ditch a bad resolution entirely (let's be honest, can anyone really go "cold turkey" on coffee?) or give yourself a tiny reward for diligently keeping your resolution so far, the Bank of America Winter Village has you covered. To top it off, we couldn't think of a better day than Friday to ditch that resolution--the beginning of a long weekend!

At Bryant Park, you can stick to your resolution to keep fit and healthy. But we know that on a cold winter day, you really can't beat the warming power and comfort of a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup. Visit the stand on the 40th Street side of the park. Run by 'wichcraft, with locally-sourced, seasonal, and high-quality ingredients, you can expect a perfect combination of cheesy goodness and savory soup. If you want to cheat on your resolution to keep healthy, this indulgence is worth it.

The sweet potato, mozzarella and olive combo with tomato soup and breadsticks.
Saving money is always a good goal, but pinch those pennies too hard and you might feel deprived. You deserve a little treat for all your financial responsibility, so splurge on a night of skating at the rink. Spring for the Fast Pass ($22 online, $25 in person)--you'll get VIP entry, enjoy complimentary bag check, and lace up a pair of freshly sharpened skates. Or crunch the numbers and gather three loved ones or friends--the Fast Pass Family Four Pack ($75, available online only) includes the perks of the Fast Pass, plus free hot chocolate at Ice Bites, and a 10% off voucher at Celsius for up to four guests. With the Family Four Pack, you can treat yourself to a wonderful evening and remain wallet-savvy.

With a Family Four Pack Fast Pass, these two will enjoy complimentary hot chocolate at Ice Bites!
Exploring NYC can be an exciting New Year's goal, but constant adventure can wear you down! Take a night off--and take the chill off, too--at the Southwest Porch. Relax with friends around the fire pit, under a heat lamp, or cuddled in a slanket. Sip one of the Porch's signature cocktails, like the Midtown Manhattan, and pay homage to our wonderful city.

Unwind around the fire pit with old friends.

Word for Word Poetry Moves Indoors This Winter

Over the last decade, Word for Word Poetry at the Bryant Park Reading Room  presented by HSBC has emerged as the city’s premier outdoor poetry series. Traditionally kicking off in April, Word for Word Poetry brings renowned, up-and-coming, and novice poets to Bryant Park throughout the warm weather months for live readings and book signings. Now, we are pleased to announce that poetry lovers won’t have to hibernate until spring to enjoy these free readings.

The Reading Room location blanketed in snow.

Designed to quell the thirst for poetry readings through the cold winter months, Word for Word's Winter Poetry series will be held indoors at Kinokuniya Bookstore, who happens to be our retail partner for all Word for Word events. Beginning on January 21, the events will be held the third Tuesday of each month through April. The sessions will be held on the street level floor inside the store, located at 1073 Avenue of the Americas (between 40th and 41st Streets), across the street from Bryant Park. The readings are free and open to all.

The first reading is at 6:00pm on Tuesday, January 21, and is co-partnered by Song Cave Press. It will feature readings by Charles North, Monica de la Torre, and Alan Felsenthal. The February session, co-partnered by Kundiman, will include appearances by Ocean Vuong, April Naoko Heck, and Purvi Shah. In March, Bryant Park welcomes Michael Broder, Julie Enszer, and Cheryl Clarke. For more information, check the Word for Word calendar.

We are currently putting together the 2014 Word for Word outdoor series, which will include author appearances, poetry readings, children’s events, Reel Talks, and much more. Keep informed by checking for poetry-related posts after each event this Winter, or by signing-up for the Reading Room newsletter.

Donate Your Coat to New York Cares

New York Cares needs your help. The organization is in the midst of its 25th Annual Coat Drive, and donations have been slow. In fact, New York Cares has collected only 30% of its goal of 104,000 coats, which are to be given to disadvantaged persons throughout the city.

Luckily, thanks to Bank of America, it’s easy for people visiting the park, or living or working nearby, to help out. Bring your clean, lightly used winter coat to the collection bin located near the exit of the Skate Pavilion. The exit of the Skate Pavilion is between the fountain and The Rink. The collection bin at Bank of America Winter Village is accessible during all park hours.

Bank of America jump-started the coat count with a donation of 100 new coats. We urge all of you to help the cause by adding to the total, while enjoying a visit to the park. This has been a brutal winter, and every donation is much appreciated.

If you can’t make it to the park, look here to find the collection bin nearest to you. You can also get involved by organizing collections at your residence or place of work. To make a donation from your desktop, you may purchase a coat online from Target or Amazon, and it will be shipped directly to New York Cares. The Coat Drive ends on February 7.

This is an excerpt from Bryant Park's weekly newsletter, MidCity Newswritten by Terry Benoit. MidCity News keeps park enthusiasts informed about our events, milestones, operations, and all of the detailed maintenance work that goes into caring for the park. Weekly updates are sent with our sister organization 34th Street Partnership

Winter of New York

As the dust settles from holiday plans and happenings, January is a time to get back into our routines, be diligent about those resolutions, and reclaim the city after the flood of visitors over the last few months. New Yorkers, this is your season.

Here at Bank of America Winter Village, we bid farewell to the Holiday Shops on Sunday. However, there's still a lot to do in the park. Go skating, dine at Celsius, cozy up around the fire pit at Southwest Porch. And on the horizon, we'll be celebrating Super Bowl XLVIII, and the Winter Olympics. We're just getting started at the Winter Village.

Snow Day

The park was blanketed in white this morning, after our first major snowfall of the season. Our crews spent the morning clearing pathways, sprinkling salt, and shoveling. The park is open, and the Rink at Bank of America Winter Village is open (weather permitting as always). Enjoy some images of our snowy park, and if you're brave enough to venture into the wintery weather, please be careful as you navigate the paths.

And make some snowmen while you're here too! #WinterVillage
