Skate Sharpening: An Inside Look

We are proud to offer a skate sharpening service at Bank of America Winter Village. We regularly sharpen the rental skates available at the rink, and are happy to sharpen guests' skates as well for a $20 fee. If you've ever wondered how skates are sharpened, here's an inside look.

Skates sharpening happens in the Skate Pavilion, past the skate rental desk, where you can also book skating lessons.

Each skate is sharpened separately. The skate is locked into a horizontal circle on the sharpening machine. The skate can then be moved by the machine operator toward the spinning buffer, which actually sharpens the skates.

Watch out for the sparks!

Then, the operator tests the skate sharpness. If it can scratch your fingernail, the skate is sharp enough.

Time to sharpen the other skate!

The whole process takes less than 10 minutes. Thank goodness it is so quick, because the rink staff sharpens dozens of pairs of skates each day to ensure a smooth and safe ride for all skaters. Now go out and enjoy some freshly cut ice with your new blades!
