Again this season I was able to use the Holiday Shops at Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park as a great resource for gift-getting for those folks on my list that appreciate well-designed things. Form and function seem to play really well together here.
Infinity Lights: Booth A1 in the 40th Street Allee
Very easy to get ‘hung up’ over these geometric fixtures. They come in kits you assemble yourself (note they are easy to tackle, but I wouldn’t call them ’simple’; you will benefit from building them with a patient friend and there are also helpful YouTube videos out there). I snapped up the basic white ‘snowball’ version for a super-reasonable $25. Another $25 got me a great color-changing LED bulb with its own remote control which finished the job handsomely.

These ‘Knotz’ woven cufflinks called out to my inner sartorialist. They’re basically classic woven Savile-Row style elastic knot cufflinks – with a twist. The bright color combinations add some great ‘pop’ and the cylindrical style is, well, totally tubular. At $10 a pair they are — hands down — one of the best deals in the Holiday Shops.

Last season I snapped up an Ollin Super Wally ($12 each, or two for $20), and truth be told I find it hard to resist getting other styles to similarly brighten up my pocket, but what caught my eye this time was the up-cycled billboard graphic wallets ($40 each). Less is more here, with sturdy stitched assembly and colorful-but-minimal surface design. One of these should easily survive repeated retrieval during the season’s marathon shopping sprees.

Life is artfully imitated with these blade-of grass pens (at $6 each / 3 for $15 they won’t eat up a lot of your green). Who better to in’form’ the look for these than Mother Nature herself? One delightful aspect of using these is that when you write with them, the long green blades waver delightfully as if caught in a sudden breeze.

Here’s a form-within-a-form: the mini-cactus vitrines for $10 each. Good things really do come in small packages here; the little glass domes are created with loops so these can be used in a variety of ways; jewelry, cord-pulls, or maybe just hanging on the holiday tree. With proper care eventually they’ll be ready to move on to ‘bigger things.’
