All The World's A Stage...With Shakespeare in Bryant Park

A few weeks ago, we celebrated the Bard's 450th birthday in the park with The Drilling Company. Actors from the company performed at least one scene from each of his plays all over the park, members of the public wrote their favorite Shakespeare quotes on a 22-foot scroll, and musicians performed Shakespeare's songs set to contemporary artists' tunes (like Bob Marley).

The Shakespeare Birthday Celebration was just a teaser for the Shakespeare events that will be occurring in the park this summer. We're excited to introduce a brand-new series, called Bryant Park Shakespeare, in which two Shakespeare plays come to the park for 9 performances each.

"To be, or not to be," visible in the bottom right corner of this photo, is a quote from Hamlet, the first play that will be performed in this series.
The Drilling Company returns to the park on May 15 for three consecutive weekends of Hamlet performances. Hamlet, a tragedy, is Shakespeare's longest and most-performed play. Revenge, death, and betrayal will have you on the edge of your seat. Whether you are a Shakespeare aficionado or have never before seen a Shakespeare play, this production will be a great start to the series.

On August 14, Boomerang Theater Company takes residency in the park for three consecutive weekends to perform Love's Labors Lost. This lighthearted comedy follows three gentlemen as they swear off women for a year to pursue study and fasting; naturally, their good intentions are thwarted by infatuation with a lady. Boomerang Theater Company is a veteran performer in Central Park's Shakespeare series, so you'll know the play is in good hands.

This actress from The Drilling Company performs a soliloquy as part of Shakespeare's birthday celebration.
With two plays and eighteen total performances, make sure that you catch at least one installment of this exciting new series in the park!
