Painter in Residence: Luis Mijangos

By Liz Balderston

Luis Mijangos, our second Painter in Residence of the Summer, was born in Mexico where he studied and practiced the art of architecture for more than 15 years. He started his career in watercolors when fellow architect and former teacher, Vincente Mendiola Q., invited him to join his group of friends who painted the old Colonial neighborhoods of Mexico City every Sunday. After a six month trip throughout Europe, Mr. Mijangos turned his focus to his art. In addition to watercolors, Mr. Mijangos is at home with oils, printmaking, and drawing.

Mr. Mijangos uses paint to create dynamic works that show the grit and beauty behind each cityscape as seen through his eyes: “As we say in Mexico: ‘Cada cabeza es un Mundo’… ‘Each head is a World’…I try to share mine through my paintings.” He has participated in innumerable shows throughout the world as both a solo artist and among his peers. We are very excited to have Mr. Mijangos in Bryant Park until July 28th, so stop by and watch him create his world.
